I would say it's pretty simple. The wests power and wealth mainly relies on Oil, which is drying up. No?

Making tech easy, accessible, and as worry-free as possible is the answer. That means you can't take the stuff you make and let other people mess with it. That means closed licensing. That means actually paying attention to what is done with the tech. That means keeping a tight rein on who can alter it and how it's done.

This is why Apple is so successful, usually by doing the opposite of everyone else. Which, in turn, prompts everyone else (with a few exceptions) to move more in Apple's direction, ironically.

Now your mom and your grandma can use tech and look like experts doing it, thanks to Apple. If you think that particular perspective doesn't matter, you're in for a huge surprise over the next few years.

You just proved my point. Thanks.

You are getting very defensive here. It is entirely on topic here to put whatever Apple is doing and criticized for into perspective. Emotions and paranoia tend to get out of hand, so comparing Apple's tiny problem with a major privacy desaster at Sony should help people recognizing properly how much or how little of a problem Apple has.

It's irrelevant to this thread topic. There are a million people dying in X and yesterday, someone got mugged near where I work. Just because millions of people are dying doesn't make the person that got mugged any less of an issue.

I'm not defensive at all. I just think if people want to talk about this issue they can without trying to compare it to something else as if that makes this issue less of an issue.

Inspired by the latest rumour on the iPhone being marketed to businesses (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/04/23/atandt-to-target-iphone-to-business-customers/), I have the theory that iLife will be released with the iPhone and will display some great integration. That way it can also continue to be called iLife '07.. barely.

What I'll never understand is why you believe some rag rumor, over the fundamentals of common sense. And you push it as if this most "controversial"
rumor is actually what's most likely to happen in the real world.

Or is generating traffic from buzz words all you really care about?

    I'm not pushing any rumor.

    - The rumor doesn't contradict loop insight's rumor, as was claimed.
    - The site aggregates rumors and in the post we mention that the sourcing of the article is suspect, and that it may even be an April Fools joke.

I spoke to two techs at PC World computer superstore (biggest computer retailer in UK) two weeks ago about monitor compatibility with my G4 Mac Mini. Turned out both these guys owned Intel Macs, folks pay $$$$ to have their PCs fixed by these guys:p . Anyway I mentioned I was waiting till Leopard to upgrade my Mac. One of the guys mentioned they'd already got the date for when Intel Mac Mini's with Leopard will be in store. Wait for it... April 2007:( . It seems unlikely that Leopard will pounce onto our screens in January.

IMHO, it still is a marketing issue. Mac-ads on Dutch TV?? Most people don't even know Apple make the iPods! ( ) If they see an iMac, some even call it the "iPod-computer", but have no idea it can do stuff their PC can do too.

LOL, I can see someone saying that.

Very true, you got me there! And the last thing this world needs is another Arab nation, so i see israel's point even more now. I'm not a jew, but i much prefer israel remains a jewish state, better for the world. Just out of curiosity, what would be your suggestion to solve the current problem in the region?

My suggestion is exactly the same as yours. Unfortunately though for those who wish Israel to remain a Jewish state, it would not be viable. This is where the fundamentally racist zionist ideology is at odds with what is essentially the only solution to this conflict.

Think about it this way. You have Israel, which as a sovereign nation has its borders etc... All of that is fine and dandy. However the fundamentalist Jews believe that they are also religiously entitled much of the land outside of Israel proper (the West Bank). The problem is if Israel were to go and say "The west bank is now part of Israel, and all of its inhabitants are now Israeli citizens", we would have our Jewish state problem (too many Arabs). So what do the Israelis do? They go in and build Jewish-only settlements, which are not exactly part of Israel, but Israeli law extends to them, the Israeli military defends them and the Israeli government supports them.

As you can imagine though the people who live in these areas aren't too happy about this slow annexation of their land and their rights, which is why there is this conflict.

This is why the notion that Israel is a democracy is so laughable. It is a democracy in Israel proper, where the Jews are artificially kept the majority (i.e it's a democracy for the Jews in Israel proper), but in areas where they would like to be but do not want Arab influence in their politics, they build Jewish only settlements. So it's a "democracy" only where they want it to be and for those they choose based on ethnic/religious background.

Frankly I think that looks like there's a pro-Jewish bias in US culture - and I'm not even looking at the military aid etc. etc.

These threads are so funny sometimes, because if i said there was a pro-Muslim bias in the UK, everyone would jump on me.

If I went on a protest saying that the Jews had to leave Israel and go back to Europe I'd be lynched.

Yes, you would. Because the Jews were almost wiped out by a genocide in Europe, hence the reason the UN gave them Israel. Excuse the jews for not feeling so safe in europe after the 1940's. Although they should probably go back to europe for their own well being nowadays, much nicer there. Wouldn't have to worry about suicide bombers so much anymore, and give Israel back to the Muslims so they can turn it back to the wasteland it was before the Jews got there. And it would help offset the muslim insurgence in europe a bit. I mean jeez, first the europeans want to get rid of the jews, now they want them back, make up your mind europe! And then you wonder why they created israel...

    Oh, and PS.
Israel isn't going anywhere. It will stay as it is now, right or wrong, all the palestinian lands will become israel at some point. And i must say, them jews made a hell of a beautiful country for themselves. It will end just like america ended up when we took all the land away from the natives. Sure, it wasn't right at the time, but worth it in the end. Palestinians will eventually just be Israeli citizens, which would only be the right thing to do.

Magnesium would be cool, but I thought it was more expensive than aluminum...strange. I'm probably wrong though.

I remember lighting thermite with strips of Mg in chemistry class. No iPod is going to burst into flames though, because the material will certainly have to be an alloy or at least coated.

    Source: Amazon (http://www.amazon.com:80/dp/B000EPJL1A)

Release date for the new Shuffle? :D
when i ordered from the apple store online, the receipt said: ship Oct. 31 and arrive Nov. 7....
but i am thinking (more hoping) that with Apple's general release date of 'October' that they are defaulting to the end of the month to cover their butts.
that gives them the leeway to extend release dates if something goes awry and if things go well & they ship sooner than expected, then Apple will have some pleasantly surprised customers.... those are just my thoughts.

it's too bad, because when i heard 'October' i assumed Oct. 1... i should have known...

but amazon is a pretty reliable source and the 11th is MUCH better than the 31st... i am on board and very hopeful that this is indeed the actual release date :)

getting the option to rent movies on itunes will be great. hell even to rent with a burn to disc option would be even better.

I'm happy apple is moving in this direction. however. need them to offer laptops with 160GB hard drives. so we can travel with a whole bunch of movies and tv shows on the hard drive when we are on the go.

yeah i know it's alot of room, but some of us have tons of aac/mp3 files.

If you need to hear my opinion on the Jewish/ Israeli Lobby; Yes, I completely agree that it is a powerful force. However, that's not focus of the story.

Do you think that the US media are hypersensitive when it comes to criticising the pro-Israeli lobby?

There can also be no question that one who reports the news needs to remain relatively objective. I could give a damn what she says in private but when one starts expressing their opinion in a profession such a journalism, you lose all credibility to report a story without undue bias.

Well, she did express it more or less in a private capacity.

Perhaps the essence of her admittedly clumsy criticism of Jewish political influence was an attempt at a level of objectivity that is lacking in the media. Whenever a person dares criticise the pro-Israel lobby, that person is pummeled by a crowd of jerking knees and cries of anti-Semitism. I'm not excusing Thomas at all, I think she went too far in her language, but I think she has a point.

I have no problem with her expressing her opinion/ point of view but with her (former) standing, she could probably wrangle a ton of op-ed space/ television interviews to voice her concerns in a tactful manner.

...unless the media are not interested in talking about that side of the story. Come to think about it, we don't hear much about it in the media, do we?....

The risk of corruption is the big one. Does nobody remember 1.1.1 anymore, and how the 1.x releases were patches? After finding out that they were getting backlash for the patch not playing nice with jailbreaks, they switched to full OS flashes.
iTunes could still check whether the 4.3.2 update is still stored on your computer and only download the delta if yes (and then merge them before doing the update). Of course, this might prolong the update process (though it will shorten the download period) and naturally it introduces new risks of this merging to fail.

I'm pretty sure you don't live here... every illegal immigrant that enters England pretty much gets to stay 90% of the time. My tax money goes to housing them, giving them a car, and whatever else they desire.

It's misguided Daily Mail-esque rubbish like this that will eventually lead to a bunch of extreme right wings (BNP) assuming power. That's when this country is screwed.

Although fair's fair, you're not racist, just wrong.

IMO Apple built this giant datacenter in order to launch its own search engine to compete with Google. Why ?

    <snip>

I think they built a giant datacenter to stay in front in the cloud race. With Amazon introducing a cloud service, HP pushing hard for cloud services, and even Microsoft singing the praises of cloud services, I think Apple see the future for selling its products will involve deep cloud integration. In order to do that, they need a cloud. Ergo, datacenter.

No, because you said it tastes moldy, and smells like feet. While I admit some beers smell nasty (Yes you, gueuze,) I've thankfully never found one that smells like my feet.

You have obviously never had a Newcastle that has gone skunky. I love Newcastle, but I hate those clear bottles.
